Basso Broadway, a series of art events to launch Basso Magazin, is bringing the flair of Berlin to New York. It couldn’t happen at a better time. Walking down Broadway, surrounded by corporate chain stores, it’s easy to forget what the streets use to signify for New York artists: pain, misery, and the hope of articulating the complexities of what it means to be human through art. In the thick of it, when no one wants your novel, your play, or wants to look at your paintings, the art community held people together. Imagine a hot New York City summer in a cramped Manhattan apartment without air conditioning. A cold beer with a fellow artist is a slice of heaven, a moment of solace. And if there is anyone who understands how to keep this vitality alive, it would be artists from Berlin.
The work is thought provoking but more importantly, the people are reminding us that the downtown Broadway art scene is still going strong.
